A lot of rhythm, color, humor and imagination is what we will find in the streets during the Carnival of Tenerife 2020. Internationally famous, it is considered the second most popular carnival in the world. It’s no surprise that it was declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest in 1980.

Originally, the Carnival of Tenerife it consisted of a parade where participants dressed up and wore masks and other types of decorations. But with the passing of time, it has become a great party without comparison, with an important follow-up and with the celebration of different competitions and open-air events for all tastes and ages.

WHEN IT HAPPENS

Carnival is a celebration that takes place just before Lent. The dates usually vary between February and March. In this edition the carnival of Santa Cruz will be between January 24 and March 1.

WHAT YOU MUST NOT MISS

The inauguration of the carnival began on 24 January, and throughout the month of February different events and competitions take place, but the main events that you should not miss are:

On 19 February the great Gala Election of the Queen of Carnival of Tenerife 2020 takes place, a contest in which the candidates parade wearing costumes called “fantasy” that can exceed three meters in height and 100 kg. They’re true works of art, the result of the work carried out by members of the different teams throughout the year, and which are assessed and chosen by a jury to represent the carnival throughout the year. This is one of the star events of the Tenerife carnival.

The next essential date takes place on Friday 21st. La gran Cabalgata Anunciadora will flood the streets of Santa Cruz with colour, batucadas and the best possible atmosphere. A huge parade in which the Queen of the Carnival, thousands of people and dozens of carnival groups take part and tour around the streets for hours. When it ends, the party begins with dancing and performances by great orchestras.

From Saturday 22 February to 1 March, the carnival begins in the street and can be at night or during the day. The party consists of the celebration of dances and performances on the different stages that are usually spread around the city. The live performances, the kiosks and the decorated cars or floats, offer a great variety of music for all tastes. From here, the population of Tenerife, the carnival par excellence, gathers together with other carnival-goers from other islands, the rest of the country or the world around the most legendary carnival meeting places, such as El Corinto or El Águila. Check the programme, mark the days on the calendar and all that remains is to enjoy and dance!

The culmination of the carnival will take place on March 1st. There will be a series of concerts and performances, an antique car competition, a tour of the streets of the city by all the groups participating in the carnival and for the final closing, there is a great pyrotechnic exhibition that you cannot miss.

DON’T FORGET YOUR COSTUME

For the people of Tenerife, the making of costumes is a tradition. They meet in groups for long sessions of sewing and creativity to develop the designs. Others, on the other hand, with little time to do so, decide to improvise and be more practical, although no less colourful. The fantasy of the costumes (this year dedicated to ‘Los coquetos años 50’) and the cheekiness of those who wear them offer a unique spectacle. If you don’t want to be out of tune, you’ll have no choice but to dress up. Put on some brightly colored fabric, some funny wig or a funny mask. The important thing is to feel comfortable and free to dance and enjoy yourself all night or day.

SOME TIPS

Carnival days are long and intense and uncomfortable shoes can take their toll. Use the most comfortable footwear you have and don’t mind getting them dirty.
Don’t neglect the weather and adapt your costume to it. Use warm and waterproof clothing.
Don’t neglect your belongings and always keep the essentials well stored: money, documents and telephone.
Use public transport. The services are reinforced on the occasion of the carnival and you do not have to worry about parking in a Santa Cruz saturated with traffic and people.

If you don’t want to go all the way to Santa Cruz, the carnival doesn’t end there. In Arona, very close to Vanilla Garden, the Arona Carnival is celebrated. GOLF LAS AMERICAS

Very close to our hotel and in the heart of Playa de Las Americas, one of the best known tourist centres in the south of Tenerife, is Golf Las Americas. Your club has a terrace area where you can enjoy the course and follow the game in total comfort. The 18-hole course is par 72 and has a total distance of 6,051 metres. Without a doubt, it is one of the most stimulating courses due to its magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean and, on clear days, of the island of La Gomera. AMARILLA GOLF

Facing the sea, Amarilla Golf presents an 18-hole course with impressive views. Playing here is an experience for the senses. North Zone

ROYAL GOLF CLUB OF TENERIFE

The Real Club de Golf de Tenerife is one of the most important golf courses in Tenerife. Founded in 1932, it is the second oldest club in Spain and still retains a typically British feel. It’s 600 meters above sea level and has a total of 18 holes, with a total course length of 5740 meters and a par of 71 strokes. It stands out for its undulating terrain and its spectacular view of the Teide. The ravines come into play in several holes and the abundant native trees give the course great beauty.

BUENAVISTA GOLF

Designed by Severiano Ballesteros, it is one of the most visited golf courses in Tenerife. Located very close to spectacular cliffs and practically in the Teno Rural Park, Buenavista Golf is ideal for golfers who are looking for a real golf experience very close to nature. The course has 18 holes, par 72 and a total length of 6,150 meters. Some of these holes are so close to the coast and they give the player the feeling of hitting the ball directly into the ocean. A large central lake and a waterfall animate this unique course in the north of Tenerife.

Diego Hernandez Beach

One of Tenerife’s nudist beaches par excellence is Playa Diego Hernández, perhaps one of the wildest beaches on the island. It is very quiet, virgin, with turquoise water and golden sand. It is a small beach, but very nice. We recommend you to visit it when the tide is low, because at high tide there is no space left in the sand, only in the rocks. Access is not easy; you have to reach the beach of La Caleta and walk about 20 minutes.

La Tejita Beach

It’s 1 kilometre long, golden sand and fascinating beauty. La Tejita is essential for people who appreciate nature and want to enjoy it without noise and without a bathing swimsuit. Parapenting in Tenerife is one of the best ways to appreciate the landscape, as well as an unforgettable experience. Is an island that hides many corners full of curiosities and incredible natural places that you will love.

Tenerife is a unique island that is perfect for excursions and sports all year round. But it is just after October that the best season to practice Parapenting begins.

Although it also depends a little on the particular weather conditions of each place, in general the best time to fly is between October and April. Especially in some specific take-off areas of the island as we recommend you.

Whether you’re an expert, or you’ve never done it, you’ll enjoy a totally safe and enjoyable flight experience.

Do you know how to fly?

You can bring your own equipment and launch yourself to enjoy; or if you prefer, you can rent one.

For your particular take off we can suggest you go to La Corona, which is in the Realejos, to the north of the island. To the East is the slope of Güímar and to the southwest you will find Taucho or Adeje.

The last one is of very easy access and one of the well-known parapenting takeoff points of the island.

Keep in mind that none of these references have an official space or infrastructure to take off or land, so it is advisable to have the supervision of specialists.

Are you still a rookie or a little respectful?

Tenerife has clubs and companies where courses for beginners are taught.

There you will be taught to fly and you will also have the option of launching yourself from a two-seater paraglider. This way you will feel more secure in the company of some expert who gives you instructions, while enjoying the breathtaking views from the top.

Apart from the above, we can recommend other takeoff points such as Izaña or the Volcano of Fasnia, southeast of Tenerife or Ifonche, in Vilaflor, if you are in the northeast.
