Bungee jumping and its origins

The history of bungee jumping is long and diverse as it did not start out as a leisure activity, it began as an activity closely related to religious festivals. It is believed to have originated on the island of Pentecost in the remote archipelago of Vanuatu. Tied to rudimentary ropes, teenagers would grow from boys to men by throwing themselves into the void. A BBC documentary in the early 1960s popularised this strange tradition. Although many other cultures have similarities in their rituals, the Voladores de Papantla in Mexico mix these leaps into the void with incredible acrobatics in a spectacle worth seeing.

Already in the 1970s a German climber named Helmut Kiene tried jumping with climbing ropes between two bridges in the French town of Annecy. His brother-in-law, who was an engineer, helped him to calculate the risks and materials before a jump for which he was not convinced. For the future, beware of advice from brothers-in-law.

In the Dangerous Club, in the 1980s, they tried out various challenges on different bridges around the world, one of them as legendary as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The activity was starting to become popular and the jumps were commonplace in the media and mass shows. In the following decades the jumpers mixed with anyone who had the courage to take on the challenge of this sport.

What do we need for bungee jumping?

Safety is essential in any jump of this type, we must trust the best professionals and use top quality material. Bungee jumping is a risky experience, but statistically very safe.

There are three basic elements for a jump. Ropes, harnesses and carabiners. These three elements must provide our jump with the necessary guarantees so as not to run any risk. It is also advisable to wear comfortable clothing and to wear a helmet and gloves as accessories.
